Why is Kosovo so important for Serbs?
Kosovo is a part of Serbia for more than 800 years.For Serbs Kosovo
represents very important part of their spiritual inheritance,part of
the country where most of the Serbian churches and monasteries are
located.The full name of Kosovo province is Kosovo and Metohija .The origin of
this name is from the word Metoh which means 'church land'.
In 1389. important battle took place in Kosovo
field when most of Serbian nobility died trying to defend Serbia from
the numerous Turkey enemy.Though there was no winner Serbia couldn't
recover from the grat human loss and soon Turkey took control of the
Serbian country.
Other history facts!!
Terkey ruled over Serbia until the 19.th century when Serbia succeded
to restore it's freedom and in 1878. to get international confirmation
as an indipendant country.
In the Balkan War which started in 1912. Serbia liberated all of it's
teritories from the Turkey.
During the WWI Serbia was occupied by Austria-Hungary which fell apart
after the war.From 1918. Serbia was a part of the Yugoslav federation.
In the WWII Serbia was again occupied by the Nazis and together with
Greece was the only country on the Balkan which opposed Hitler's fasistic
Germany.
After the WWII Yugoslavia became communist country ruled by Tito.
Yugoslav federation fell apart during the 1990's and only Serbia and
Montenegro stayed in it.
Why are the Albanians majority in Kosovo??
Serbs lives in Kosovo for more than thousand years.Albanians were sattled
on Kosovo during The Turkey rule because Turkey tried to gain control
over this part of Serbia.Thousands of Serbs had to leave Kosovo but they
still were the majority.Before the WWII there were more than 60% of Serbs
in Kosovo.During the WWII again hundreds of thousands of Serbs were
killed or expulsed from Kosovo. The communist goverment brought more
suffering to the Serbian people in Kosovo and the part of the population
which was expulsed during the war was forbiden to come back to their
homes.This resulted that after the war the Albanians became majority
in Kosovo.After the WWII Serbs continued to flee from Kosovo because
the communist goverment favoured the Albanians and tried to make life in
Kosovo almost uimpossible for the Serbian people.This resulted these days
ethnic situation in Kosovo.
